Glorious things of thee are spoken,

Zion, city of our God.

He, whose word cannot be broken

formed thee for His own abode:

on the rock of ages founded,

what can shake thy sure repose?

With salvation's walls surrounded,

thou may'st smile at all thy foes.

2.  See, the streams of living waters,

springing from eternal love,

well supply thy sons and daughters

and all fear of want remove:

who can faint, while such a river

ever flows their thirst to assuage?

Grace which, like the Lord, the giver,

never fails from age to age.

3.  Saviour, if of Zion's city

I, through grace, a member am,

let the world deride or pity,

I will glory in Thy name:

fading is the worldling's pleasure,

all his boasted pomp and show;

solid joys and lasting treasure

none but Zion's children know.

PRAYER OF PREPARATION

Almighty God,

to whom all hearts are open,

all desires known,

and from whom no secrets are hidden:

cleanse the thoughts of our hearts

by the inspiration of your holy Spirit,

that we may perfectly love you,

and worthily magnify your holy name;

through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

CONFESSION

The sacrifice of God is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart God will not despise. Let us come to the Lord, who is full of compassion, and acknowledge our transgressions in penitence and faith.

Father eternal, giver of light and grace,

we have sinned against you and against our neighbour,

in what we have thought,

in what we have said and done,

through ignorance, through weakness,

through our own deliberate fault.

We have wounded your love,

and marred your image in us.

We are sorry and ashamed,

and repent of all our sins.

For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,

who died for us,

forgive us all that is past;

and lead us out from darkness

to walk as children of light.

Amen.

ABSOLUTION

May the Father of all mercies

cleanse us from our sins,

and restore us in his image

to the praise and glory of his name,

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

COLLECT

Lord of creation,

whose glory is around and within us:

open our eyes to your wonders,

that we may serve you with reverence

and know your peace at our lives’ end,

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

1. Blessed is the man,

the man who does not walk

in the counsel of the ungodly-blessed is that man.

He who rejects the way,

rejects the way of sin

and who turns away from scoffing-blessed is that man.

But his delight-by day and night-

is the law of God Almighty.

2. He is like a tree-a tree that flourishes

being planted by the water-blessed is that man.

He will bring forth fruit-his leaf will wither not-

for in all he does he prospers-blessed is that man.

For his delight-by day and night-

is the law of God Almighty.

3. The ungodly are not so-for they

are like the chaff which the wind blows

clean away-the ungodly are not so.

The ungodly will not stand-upon

the judgement day nor belong to God's own people-

the ungodly will not stand.

But God knows the way of righteous men

and ungodly ways will perish.

Blessed is the man, the man who does not walk in the counsel of the ungodly-blessed is that man.

READINGS                                                                                                                    John 21: 1-14

 Later, Jesus appeared again to the disciples beside the Sea of Galilee. This is how it happened. 2 Several of the disciples were there—Simon Peter, Thomas (nicknamed the Twin), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples.

3 Simon Peter said, “I’m going fishing.”

“We’ll come, too,” they all said. So, they went out in the boat, but they caught nothing all night.

4 At dawn Jesus was standing on the beach, but the disciples couldn’t see who he was. 5 He called out, “Fellows, have you caught any fish?”

“No,” they replied.

6 Then he said, “Throw out your net on the right-hand side of the boat, and you’ll get some!” So, they did, and they couldn’t haul in the net because there were so many fish in it.

7 Then the disciple Jesus loved said to Peter, “It’s the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his tunic (for he had stripped for work), jumped into the water, and headed to shore. 8 The others stayed with the boat and pulled the loaded net to the shore, for they were only about a hundred yards from shore. 9 When they got there, they found breakfast waiting for them—fish cooking over a charcoal fire, and some bread.

10 “Bring some of the fish you’ve just caught,” Jesus said. 11 So Simon Peter went aboard and dragged the net to the shore. There were 153 large fish, and yet the net hadn’t torn.

12 “Now come and have some breakfast!” Jesus said. None of the disciples dared to

ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. 13 Then Jesus served them

the bread and the fish. 14 This was the third time Jesus had appeared to his

disciples since he had been raised from the dead.

This the word of the Lord.

            Thanks be to God.

Questions for Reflection

·       Why do you think the disciples went back to fishing after Jesus had died?

·       Why was it significant that Jesus asks the disciples to throw their net to the other side of the boat?

·       Jesus invites the disciples to join him and eat breakfast. Do you remember when Jesus invited you into relationship with him? What are the significant parts or moments of your faith story?

·       Jesus asks the disciples to bring “bring the fish” that they had caught. What gifts and skills has God given you?

·       Jesus invites us to partner with him in mission. Where and to whom is God calling you to go and make disciples?

THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God, the Father almighty,

creator of heaven and earth

I believe in Jesus Christ,

his only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the Virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried;

he descended to the dead.

On the third day he rose again;

he ascended into heaven,

he is seated at the right hand

of the Father,

and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic Church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting.

Amen

O LORD, HEAR MY PRAYER,

O Lord, hear my prayer:

When I call answer me.

O Lord, hear my prayer,

O Lord, hear my prayer:

Come and listen to me.

PRAYERS

Gracious God, fountain of all wisdom,

we pray for all Christian people;

for Bishop Pete and Bishop Sophie, for all Christian leaders,

and for those who teach and guard the faith …

May the word of Christ dwell richly in our hearts,

and knit us together in the bond of your love.

Hear us.

Hear us, good Lord.

We pray for the leaders of the nations,

and for those in authority under them …

Give them the gift of your wisdom,

and a right discernment in all things.

Hear us.

Hear us, good Lord.

We pray for our city Sheffield and this community of Greystones

for those who live and work here,

and for those who visit this place …

Speak your word of peace in our midst,

and help us to serve one another as Christ has served us.

Hear us.

Hear us, good Lord.

We pray for those who do not believe,

and yet who long to know you, the very Word of life …

Open their ears to hear your voice,

and open their hearts to the knowledge

of your love in Christ.

Hear us.

Hear us, good Lord.

We pray for those bowed down with grief,

fear or sickness,

Take a moment of silence to pray particularly for those you know who are hurting at this time.

May your living Word bring comfort and healing

to all those in need.

Hear us.

Hear us, good Lord.

We give thanks for all those who have died in the

faith of Christ

and we rejoice with all your saints,

trusting in the promise of your word fulfilled.

Lord of life,

hear our prayer,

and make us one in heart and mind

to serve you with joy for ever.

Amen.

LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name,

your Kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins

as we forgive those

who sin against us.

Lead us not into temptation

but deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power,

and the glory are yours

now and for ever. Amen

In Christ alone my hope is found.

He is my light, my strength, my song;

this Cornerstone, this solid ground,

firm through the fiercest

drought and storm.

What heights of love,

what depths of peace,

when fears are stilled,

when strivings cease!

My Comforter, my all in all,

here in the love of Christ I stand.

2. In Christ alone! - who took on flesh,

Fullness of God in helpless babe!

This gift of love and righteousness,

scorned by the ones He came to save:

till on that cross as Jesus died,

the wrath of God was satisfied -

for ev’ry sin on Him was laid;

here in the death of Christ I live.

3. There in the ground His body lay,

Light of the world by darkness slain:

then bursting forth in glorious Day

up from the grave He rose again!

And as He stands in victory

sin's curse has lost its grip on me,

for I am His and He is mine -

bought with the precious blood of Christ.

4. No guilt in life, no fear in death,

this is the power of Christ in me;

from life's first cry to final breath;

Jesus commands my destiny.

No power of hell, no scheme of man,

can ever pluck me from His hand;

till He returns or calls me home,

here in the pow’r of Christ I'll stand!

SAY:

Yours, Lord, is the greatness, the power,

the glory, the splendour, and the majesty;

for everything in heaven and on earth is yours.

All things come from you,

and of your own do we give you.

FORTH IN THY NAME, O LORD, I GO,

My daily labour to pursue,

Thee, only Thee, resolved to know

In all I think, or speak, or do.

The task Thy wisdom hath assigned

O let me cheerfully fulfil;

In all my works Thy presence find,

And prove Thy acceptable will.

Thee may I set at my right hand,

Whose eyes my inmost substance see;

And labour on at Thy command,

And offer all my works to Thee.

Give me to bear Thy easy yoke,

And every moment watch and pray,

And still to things eternal look,

And hasten to Thy glorious day.

For Thee delightfully employ

Whate'er Thy bounteous grace hath given,

And run my course with even joy,

And closely walk with Thee to heaven.
