OPENING

OPENING

Faithful One, whose word is life: come with saving power to free our praise, inspire our prayer and shape our lives. For the kingdom of your Son Jesus Christ  our Lord. Amen.

HYMN: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tu2uA6U4Fxg

And can it be that I should gain

an interest in the Saviour's blood?

Died He for me, who caused His pain?

For me, who Him to death pursued?

Amazing love! how can it be

that Thou, my God,

shouldst die for me!

2 'Tis mystery all!  The Immortal dies;

who can explore His strange design?

In vain the first-born seraph tries

to sound the depths of love divine.

'Tis mercy all let earth adore,

let angel minds inquire no more.

3 He left His Father's throne above -

so free, so infinite His grace -

emptied Himself of all but love,

and bled for Adam's helpless race.

'Tis mercy all, immense and free;

for, O my God, it found out me!

4 Long my imprisoned spirit lay

fast bound in sin and nature's night;

Thine eye diffused a quickening ray -

I woke, the dungeon flamed with light;

my chains fell off, my heart was free.

I rose, went forth, and followed Thee.

5 No condemnation now I dread;

Jesus, and all in Him is mine!

Alive in Him, my living Head,

and clothed in righteousness divine,

bold I approach the eternal throne,

and claim the crown,

through Christ, my own.

Charles Wesley (1707-88)

PRAYER OF PREPARATION

Almighty God,

to whom all hearts are open,

all desires known,

and from whom no secrets are hidden:

cleanse the thoughts of our hearts

by the inspiration of your holy Spirit,

that we may perfectly love you,

and worthily magnify your holy name;

through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

CONFESSION

Coming together as God’s family, with confidence let us ask the Father’s forgiveness for our failure to respond fully to his grace, for he is full of gentleness and compassion

A time of silence - for reflection

Lord, when we resist your work within us;

Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy

Jesus, when we prefer not to be changed;

Christ, have mercy. Christ, have mercy

Lord, when our attitudes are moulded by hardness of heart;

Lord, have mercy, Lord, have mercy.

May Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins,

and keep us in eternal life. Amen.

COLLECT

God our saviour,

look on this wounded world

in pity and in power;

hold us fast to your promises of peace

won for us by your Son,

our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen

JESUS PUT THIS SONG INTO OUR HEARTS,

Jesus put this song into our hearts,

It’s a song of joy no one can take away,

Jesus put this song into our hearts.

Jesus taught us how to live in harmony,

Jesus taught us how to live in harmony,

Different faces, different races, He made us one,

Jesus taught us how to live in harmony.

Jesus taught us how to be a family,

Jesus taught us how to be a family,

Loving one another with the love that He gives,

Jesus taught us how to be a family.

Jesus turned our sorrow into dancing,

Jesus turned our sorrow into dancing,

Changed our tears of sadness into rivers of joy,

Jesus turned our sorrow into a dance.

READINGS

Galatians 5: 1, 13 – 25                                                                    New Living Translation

So Christ has truly set us free. Now make sure that you stay free, and don’t get tied up again in slavery to the law.

For you have been called to live in freedom, my brothers and sisters. But don’t use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature. Instead, use your freedom to serve one another in love. For the whole law can be summed up in this one command:

“Love your neighbour as yourself.” But if you are always biting and devouring one another, watch out! Beware of destroying one another.

Living by the Spirit’s Power

So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves. The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is the exact opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires.

These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions. But when you are directed by the Spirit, you are not under obligation to the law of Moses.

When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarrelling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these.

Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God.

But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!

Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there.

Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives.

Luke 9. 51 – end                                                                              New Living Translation

As the time drew near for him to ascend to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem. He sent messengers ahead to a Samaritan village to prepare for his arrival. But the people of the village did not welcome Jesus because he was on his way to Jerusalem. When James and John saw this, they said to Jesus, “Lord, should we call down fire from heaven to burn them up?” But Jesus turned and rebuked them. So they went on to another village.

As they were walking along, someone said to Jesus, “I will follow you wherever you go.”

But Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens to live in, and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place even to lay his head.”

He said to another person, “Come, follow me.”

The man agreed, but he said, “Lord, first let me return home and bury my father.”

But Jesus told him, “Let the spiritually dead bury their own dead! Your duty is to go and preach about the Kingdom of God.”

Another said, “Yes, Lord, I will follow you, but first let me say goodbye to my family.”

But Jesus told him, “Anyone who puts a hand to the plough and then looks back is not fit for the Kingdom of God.”

THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God, the Father almighty,

creator of heaven and earth

I believe in Jesus Christ,

his only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the Virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried;

he descended to the dead.

On the third day he rose again;

he ascended into heaven,

he is seated at the right hand

of the Father,

and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic Church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting.

Amen

O LORD, HEAR MY PRAYER,

O Lord, hear my prayer:

When I call answer me.

O Lord, hear my prayer,

O Lord, hear my prayer:

Come and listen to me.

PRAYERS - written by John Gough

you are here with us and ask that you hear our prayers.

We pray for the people of Afghanistan who have been affected by a terrible earthquake on Tuesday evening, more than 1,000 people have lost their lives, many of them being children. Hundreds more have been injured with the death toll expected to continue to rise in the days ahead. In many rural areas dwellings that are unstable and poorly built have led to whole villages being destroyed.

We also pray for the peoples of India and Bangladesh where torrential rains have caused flooding. Homes have been lost and thousands of people have been moved to shelters for safety.

Lord be close to the bereaved and injured surround them with your loving arms and guide them through the difficult times ahead.

We pray for all the aid agencies and rescue workers who will be involved in providing much needed support to help these peoples in the coming months.

Lord in your mercy.....

Lord we pray for our country and especially for all in government, grant them wisdom and courage with all decision making that will affect people that are struggling with the impact of price rises affecting utility bills, food and petrol prices. we pray that adequate support can be provided to help offset the ongoing increases to allow people to manage in the months ahead.

Lord we pray for positive outcomes in the negotiations with the rail unions and that acceptable agreements can be reached that will allow the strike to be brought to an end. With the possibility of further strikes occurring in other areas we pray that common sense will prevail in all meetings and negotiations that will take place.

Lord we pray for our church and parish here in Greystones.

We ask that that you will grant us wisdom and courage when opportunities arise in our daily lives to be able to speak about our trust and faith in you.
To tell people about our worship here at St Gabriels, the Playmates and Cuppa & Cake that meet on Fridays,the Uniform Organisations and also about the Holiday Club with this year's theme Guardians of Ancora,Treasure Seekers.

Merciful Father.........

LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name,

your Kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins

as we forgive those

who sin against us.

Lead us not into temptation

but deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power,

and the glory are yours

now and for ever.

Amen

My Jesus, my Saviour,

Lord, there is none like you;

all of my days I want to praise

the wonders of your mighty love.

My comfort, my shelter,

tower of refuge and strength,

let every breath, all that I am

never cease to worship you.

Shout to the Lord all the earth,

let us sing power and majesty,

praise to the King;

mountains bow down and the seas will roar

at the sound of your name.

I sing for joy at the work of your hands,

forever I'll love you, forever I'll stand;

nothing compares to the promise I have in you.
