Juanita Ryan, at the beginning of her study on psalms, writes that ‘the psalms are acts of relating to God. In the intense language of poetry, they address God with frankness and urgency. They give voice to our inner turmoil... The psalms offer us the gifts of expression, courage and celebration - and the gift of raw honesty. The psalms do not attempt to be “nice” or “polite” or even “theologically correct.” Instead, they give us permission to talk to God without holding back and to be exactly where we are and who we are with God.’ The psalms enable us to be ‘free to’ (as our series is entitled) talk to God and allow Him to impact every aspect of our lives as we open ourselves to Him with honest prayer. My hope is that this series will encourage and equip us to dive into, not only the individual psalms we will be focusing on, but into the whole book, enlivening our prayer life and reigniting our worship to God.
